Overnight Coach Journeys: How to Sleep Well

Tips on sleep, what to wear and breaks on overnight departures, and how to avoid a tired morning after you arrive.

A city view on an overnight journey

Overnight departures are the most practical way to avoid spending the day on the road: you board in the evening and arrive in the morning. But overnight travel has its own rules; a few small preparations mean you arrive in the morning rested rather than tired.

Before You Set Off

On an overnight journey, it is important to adjust your sleep routine to the trip. Eating something light rather than a heavy meal a few hours before departure, and cutting down on coffee and similar stimulants in the evening, makes it easier to fall asleep. Arriving early at the terminal or boarding point removes the stress of a last-minute rush.

The temperature on the coach can change during the night. A light extra layer, a cardigan or a shawl is the easiest way to avoid feeling cold under the air conditioning. Small items such as a neck pillow and an eye mask improve the quality of your sleep far more than you might expect.

On the Way

On overnight routes, breaks are taken at rest areas along the way. On the Didim–Ankara route the Istiklal Rest Area is used, and on the Didim–Istanbul route the Karagul Rest Area. You can find every stop on both routes in our guide to stops and breaks. A short walk during the break eases the stiffness of sitting in the same position for a long time.

If you plan to sleep, dimming your phone screen and listening to quiet background sound through headphones helps. Keeping your valuables in the bag beside you rather than in the seat pocket lets you sleep with peace of mind.

Do not rely on the arrival timeThe arrival times shown are estimates. If you have an appointment or a connection in the morning, allow at least an hour; traffic and break times can vary on overnight routes.

Getting Going After a Morning Arrival

The hardest part of an overnight journey is often the time after you arrive. Once you are off the coach, walking for a few minutes, washing your face and having a hot drink will quickly shake off the grogginess. Checking your route on your phone before getting on public transport means you are less likely to head the wrong way while you are tired.

If you have work or an appointment on the same day, allow at least an hour on top of the arrival time. If the terminal has a left-luggage service, leaving your suitcase there and travelling light for the day is also a good option.

Overnight Journey Checklist
