Discover Selcuk

Selcuk is a small town south of Izmir, yet it is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey: Ephesus. The town centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, which makes Selcuk an ideal base for history lovers.

Things to see in Selcuk

  • Ephesus: A UNESCO World Heritage site where the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the Terrace Houses are the highlights. It lies about 3 kilometres from the town centre. The Terrace Houses need a separate ticket, and if you start at the upper gate and finish at the lower gate, the walk is downhill all the way.
  • Temple of Artemis: Counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the temple is marked today by a single re-erected column.
  • House of the Virgin Mary: Set on Mount Koressos, it is an important place of pilgrimage for both Christians and Muslims.
  • Ayasuluk Hill: The remains of the Basilica of St John and Ayasuluk Castle stand on this hill above the town.
  • Isa Bey Mosque: Built in the 14th century under the Aydinid dynasty, it is one of the finest examples of Anatolian Beylik architecture.
  • Ephesus Museum: Finds from the excavations, including the famous statues of Artemis, are displayed in the town centre.
  • Sirince: A hillside village about 8 kilometres from Selcuk, known for its stone houses and fruit wines.
  • Pamucak and Camlik: The long sandy beach at Pamucak, where the Little Menderes river meets the sea, is the closest beach to Selcuk, and the Steam Locomotive Museum at Camlik makes an unusual stop.
