With its historic bazaars, seafront walks and connections such as the Didim–Izmir route, Izmir suits every kind of plan, from a day trip to a long weekend. If you arrive by coach, starting your route around Konak makes it easy to see the city's landmarks one after another.
Konak, Kemeralti and the Clock Tower
Konak Square and its Clock Tower are the natural starting point for a walk through central Izmir. From the square you can stroll to Kemeralti Bazaar and explore its historic inns, small shops and traditional food stops. The bazaar covers a large area, so marking the places you want to see in advance saves time.
If you want to combine history with views over the city, consider heading to the Historic Elevator (Asansor) or Kadifekale after Kemeralti. Rather than cramming your programme, grouping nearby areas into the same day makes for a more relaxed visit.
Late Afternoon on the Kordon
Heading north along the shore from Konak brings you to Alsancak and the Kordon promenade. The hours around sunset are ideal for a walk and a rest. Ferry, metro, tram and bus connections make it possible to plan your day in the centre without a car; however, check the municipality's transport channels for the latest timetables.
Getting Around Izmir
Public transport in Izmir is made up of the metro, the IZBAN suburban railway, trams, ferries and municipal buses. To get from the bus station to the centre, most passengers take a municipal bus or a coach company shuttle and connect to the metro. Between the two sides of the bay, the ferry is a practical option, both for the views and for avoiding the traffic.
Fares on public transport are paid with the city travel card; you can buy one and top it up at kiosks around the terminal and at the stops. Lines and timetables can change, so it is best to check the municipality's official transport channels on the day you travel.
Splitting the Day in Two
If you are fitting Izmir into a single day, the most comfortable plan is to spend the morning in the historic centre and the afternoon by the sea. In the morning you can walk around Konak and Kemeralti, visit the bazaar's old inns and stop for lunch inside the bazaar. Local specialities such as boyoz, gevrek and kumru are easy to find in this area.
In the afternoon, moving on to Alsancak and walking along the Kordon will ease the day's tiredness. If you have an evening coach, allow time for traffic on your way back to the bus station; city transport can get busy in the evening.
