Didim Travel Guide: Temple of Apollo, Altinkum and Surroundings
What to see in Didim, the best stretches of coast and a short sightseeing plan: where to stay, how to get around town and how to arrange your transport.
Didim is one of the standout stops for anyone planning a relaxed holiday on the Aegean coast, bringing together ancient heritage, a long stretch of coastline and day trips in the surrounding area in a single journey. If this is your first visit, start with a balanced plan built around the town centre, Altinkum and the Yenihisar area.
Your First Stop in Didim: the Temple of Apollo
One of the best places to start if you want to understand Didim's history is the Temple of Apollo. Part of the ancient sanctuary of Didyma, the temple is one of the town's symbols, known for its huge columns and fine stonework. Opening hours can change with the season, so check the latest information before you set off; in summer especially, a visit in the morning or late afternoon makes for a more comfortable trip.
You can take a short walk around the Yenihisar area surrounding the temple and then head down to the coast. If you want a route focused on history, it is better to set aside a separate day for the sites near Didim, such as the ancient cities of Miletus and Priene.
Altinkum and the Coastal Route
With its lively seafront and its closeness to the centre of Didim, Altinkum suits the second half of the day. You can walk along the beach, watch the sunset and join one of the boat trips to the nearby coves. If you are looking for a quieter stretch of coast, add the Akbuk side or the small coves outside the centre to your plan.
Where to Stay in Didim and How to Get Around
Three areas stand out for accommodation: the centre (Yenihisar), Altinkum on the coast and the quieter Akbuk side. Staying in the centre keeps you close to the bus station and everyday needs; Altinkum suits those who want to be right by the sea; and Akbuk offers a slower pace away from the crowds.
Getting around town is by dolmus (shared minibus) and taxi. As the bus station is in the centre, you will not need a long transfer when you arrive. If you plan to move between beaches during the day, finding out the dolmus times makes the evening trip back much easier.
