A long coach journey can be far more comfortable with a little preparation beforehand. Your choice of seat, how you pack your hand luggage, what you wear and how you use the breaks all have a direct effect on your comfort.

Before You Travel

When you buy your ticket, check the departure point, the roadside boarding point and the time together. Allow time for traffic rather than reaching the terminal or boarding point at the last minute. Keep your ID, ticket/PNR, phone and any medication you need in a small bag within easy reach, not inside your suitcase. See our baggage page for luggage allowances and rules.

The temperature on the coach can change, so choose comfortable clothes you can layer. Small items such as a neck pillow, a light extra layer and headphones can be especially useful on overnight journeys.

What Should Be in Your Hand Luggage?

  • Your ID, ticket details and any personal medication you need.
  • Water, a small snack and hygiene products.
  • A charging cable, a power bank and headphones.
  • A light extra layer, an eye mask or a neck pillow.

What to Do During Breaks

On long routes, the coach stops for breaks at rest areas. A break is a chance not only to eat but also to get your circulation going: a walk of a few minutes and some simple stretches ease heavy legs. A light snack instead of heavy, greasy food will keep you more comfortable for the rest of the journey.

When you get off for a break, take your phone, wallet and ticket with you, and confirm the departure time with the crew. The length of the break can vary with the route and road conditions.

Feeling More Comfortable Along the Way

Taking a short walk during breaks and not staying in the same position for too long both help you relax. Remember to drink enough water, and cut down on very heavy food before the journey. Do not leave your phone, wallet or valuables on your seat.

Travelling with Children and Babies

When travelling with children, seat choice and break planning are the two key points. Rows between the front and the middle of the coach, away from the wheels, reduce the bumps. Keep a favourite toy, snacks and a change of clothes for the little ones in your hand luggage; you will not be able to reach anything you put in the luggage hold during the journey.

For passengers who suffer from travel sickness, front seats, looking at a fixed point and avoiding heavy meals before the journey all help. If you are going to take medication, plan to take it before departure.

ReminderThe arrival times shown are estimates. Leave enough time for your onward travel to allow for traffic, weather, breaks and road conditions.
