Compare Didim's beaches: which stretch of coast suits whom, how to start the day, and how to plan your transport and your beach day.

The Didim shoreline and the Aegean coast

Altinkum is the first name that comes to mind when people think of Didim, but the district's coastline is much more than a single beach. Your choice depends on whether you want a lively seafront, a shallow and sheltered cove or a day away from the crowds. In this guide we explain what sets Didim's best-known beaches apart and how to start your day.

What to Look for When Choosing a Beach in Didim

Three questions make choosing a beach easier: Do you want cafes and shops within walking distance? Is shallow water important to you? Will an afternoon breeze bother you? Didim's coast varies noticeably on all three. The beaches near the centre let you sort out everything you need on foot; the further you go from the centre, the fewer people there are, but you will need to take your own water and food.

Before planning your beach days, take a look at the ways of getting to Didim. There is one more detail for anyone arriving by coach: Didim Bus Station is in the town centre, and you reach the beaches from the centre by dolmus (shared minibus) or taxi. You can look up Izmir – Didim departures and our other routes on the route pages. That is why starting your first day at a beach near the centre lets you drop off your things and settle in.

Altinkum, Mavisehir and Akbuk

Altinkum, named after its fine sand (the name means "golden sand"), is Didim's best-known beach. A promenade, cafes and shops line the seafront, and the shallow water makes it a favourite with families with children. In summer, the middle of the day is the busiest time; early mornings and late afternoons are more relaxed.

The Mavisehir side suits those who want to escape the bustle of the centre a little. In this area, dominated by holiday housing complexes, the shore is more spread out and quieter. Akbuk, meanwhile, is sheltered from the wind thanks to its cove shape and is a favourite for anyone who wants to spend the day by clear water in green surroundings. Getting to Akbuk from the centre takes a little longer, so plan a full day rather than half a day.

If you want to get away from the crowds completely, there are small coves to the north and south of the district. There are few businesses at these spots, so you will need to take your own sunshade, water and snacks.

How to plan the dayA morning swim at a beach near the centre, a break in the shade in the afternoon and a walk along the seafront in the late afternoon. On windy days, beaches in sheltered coves are more comfortable.

Practical Tips for a Beach Day

  • In summer the sun is at its strongest between 11:00 and 16:00; do not forget a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
  • You may need cash at the beach; it is handy to carry a small amount before you leave the centre.
  • If your return coach leaves in the evening, plan to leave your suitcase where you are staying rather than at the bus station's left-luggage office; traffic back from the beaches can build up in summer.
  • Check for lifeguards and warning signs before going into the sea; there can be currents on windy days.
  • When you head to the beach, set the return time on your bus ticket as a reminder on your phone.
